Surgery for Anal Fissure

Lateral Anal Sphincterotomy for Anal Fissure

What is this operation?

This operation involves cutting a very small part of the internal sphincter muscle around the anal canal. The internal muscle has minimal role in continence. A very small incision is made on the side of the anal canal under general anaesthesia and the muscle divided. It is a day procedure.

What are the complications?

This is a very safe operation with very few side effects. The aim of the operation is to make the anal muscle less tight. Patients may have some leakage of gas but no incontinence. This will improve. There will some minor bleeding.

When can I return to work?

Most patients can return to work within 48 hours.
